Southern Illinois Radio Information Service
Southern Illinois Radio Information Service
Clara Bowie
Clara Bowie performed an evening of "Poetry and More" as a fundraiser for SIRIS on March 31st at the Newman Center on the campus of SIU. Clara was accompanied by Kay Deffley on piano, and she recited some of her original poems as well as those of some of her favorite poets. It was an evening of enjoying the spoken word, and special music!

About SIRIS
The Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS) is a non-profit organization that provides a reading and information service for blind, visually impaired, and print-disabled individuals. Voice recordings are broadcast on special radios provided free of charge to anyone in our listening area who is unable to read normal printed material.

Who's Eligible for SIRIS
Any person whose eyesight or physical condition makes it difficult or impossible to read a newspaper or book may receive SIRIS broadcasts. Local, area and national newspapers and magazines are available to the listeners.

SIRIS Technology
The Radio Information Service is broadcast through a closed-circuit frequency on WSIU and WVSI FM's main signals, and can be heard only on a special radio called a subcarrier receiver. These receivers are provided at no cost to qualified users.

Volunteer Readers
The information service depends on volunteers to read aloud the various materials. It's easy to become a SIRIS volunteer. All it takes is a clear, understandable voice and a love of reading. If you can spend an hour reading a current newspaper or magazine aloud, we'd love to have your help. (If you prefer not to read aloud, administrative volunteer tasks are available.)

Funding
SIRIS receives funding from the Illinois State Library (Secretary of State's Office) and several local United Way Campaigns. The remainder of our funding must come from local donations. Your support is greatly appreciated. To make a contribution you may pledge online now, or contact us by mail or phone at:
