About the Producer

Jay Needham
An assistant professor in the SIUC Radio Television department, Needham teaches audio courses as part of the Program in Audio, SIUC College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. He is a sound media artist who embraces a multi-disciplinary approach to arts practice, with many of his pieces relating to oral and natural history, environmental issues, and Border conflicts. His professional specialties include video, film, digital audio production, and electro-acoustic music.

Needham received his M.F.A. from The California Institute of the Arts. His radio documentary Listening at the Border was a special presentation at Sonic Interventions in Amsterdam and was part of the Noise Theory Noise #2 Conference & Exhibition in London in 2004. It also aired on the WSIU Radio stations in January 2005 as part of Radio Voices, a local series showcasing original audio essays, commentaries, and other works by voices from the southern Illinois region.

“Blacktop”, Needham’s narrative work for radio, has been streamed as a part of New Media Scotland’s Resonant Cities program and will be released as a part of Deep Wireless II in 2005 by New Adventures in Sound Art.
