 Study Circles:
WSIU Public Television has been working with community partners for the past two years on a community diversity project, Many Faces/Many Voices. Explore the national Many Faces/Many Voices project web site here. The basis for the project, in coordination with local and national programs, is the use of study circles.
What is a study circle?
We invite community groups, churches, schools and universities to share your response to the terrorist attacks through local study circles. Study circles can help your group learn more about the issues, influence local policy, create new connections in the community, and take an active role in the democratic process.
Resources for Community Groups:
- The Kettering Foundation, an operating foundation established in 1927 whose research focus is, "What does it take to make democracy work as it should?"
- Four Things Citizens Can Do, ideas by Richard Harwood on moving forward, with awareness, in a tenuous new world
- Public Agenda Online offers a special edition on terrorism, consisting of a series of interviews with experts in foreign policy and public opinion
- National Issues Forums, a nationwide network of educational and community organizations, has a thought-provoking list of questions to discuss as a result of the events of September 11, 2001
- Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies addresses issues of special concern to black Americans and other minorities.

- A videotape and viewer's guide for Test of Courage: The Making of a Firefighter can be obtained through WSIU Public Television. To request, please contact Beth Spezia or by calling 618-453-4344. Test of Courage is an intimate portrait of young men and women from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds who must compete to become firefighters in Oakland, California.
- A videotape and viewer's guide for Blink, the redemption story of former white supremacist Gregory Withrow, who renounced the world of hate when he fell in love with a woman whose parents fled Nazi Germany, can be obtained by contacting Beth Spezia or by calling 618-453-4344.
